One day course for main stream Schools

To provide participants with the skills to de-escalate a
conflict and to minimise the need for physical intervention.
Also, to provide skills to safely control an individual
(if there is a need) should de-escalation fail or you have
entered a live situation late.
The list of subjects below is not exhaustive. The final
programme for the day course will be decided after an initial
consultation with the organisation involved. If there are
any aspects that you wish covered but don’t appear
on the list below then please let us know.
What is conflict?
Look to define what “conflict” is and how this
relates to the working environment. Looking at how conflict
can arise and how without proper management this can lead
to violence.
Examine the triggers of aggression and violence.
Here we will look at the most common and likely ways in
which individuals are triggered into reacting in an aggressive
manner. Also we examine why individuals do this. We explore
how we can minimise the chances of a situation getting out
of our control.
Risk assessment
How an organisation can reduce the risks it faces when having
to deal with challenging behaviour.
How to prevent a situation becoming physical
Looking at proven methods for verbally de-escalating a situation.
We also examine body language and how this can work to our
advantage and also how our body language may contribute
to aggression without us being aware.
If a situation becomes physical how can we deal
with it safely?
In this part of the course we will look at how we can deal
with a child who is intent on causing harm to either himself
or others and how we can effectively and safely prevent
this.
Different approaches for adult and child de-escalation.
What works for one may not work for the other. Here we explore
the important differences between the groups.
De – brief
After roll play we will have an open conversation with the
participants to get feedback and to perform some form of
group exercise to ensure that participants leave the course
feeling positive. This is essential after dealing with conflict
resolution.
Please note that this course is not a policy statement and
is a stand alone course to provide individuals with positive
safe handling skills.
This seminar will provide participants with cutting edge
research, best practices, and lessons learned in safe child
handling. The seminar includes diverse learning opportunities,
including plenary sessions, workshops and "hands on"
practice sessions. Innovations from around the world will
be presented addressing such topics as, good practice tips,
effective training techniques and successful organisational
strategies.
