How often in the course of your work do you feel intimidated?
Have you ever been in a situation at work where you felt
threatened?
Have you ever felt afraid about the possibility of being
attacked when travelling to and from work?
People often have a ‘it won’t happen to me’
attitude. So do the victims of crime. Nobody asks to be
attacked or assaulted; no-one is immune from the risk.
Aggression and violence faced by staff is sadly common place
in both the public and private sector organisations with
increasing numbers of incidents of workrelated violence
reported. Incidents vary from verbal abuse to actual physical
harm. Even the threat of violence can significantly undermine
staff morale and motivation, contributing to increased stress-related
illness and turnover of staff. In some cases, it can end
in costly and unnecessary legal proceedings.
The primary responsibility for safety at work rests
with the employer.
(Health and Safety at Work Act 1974)
Furthermore, employers have an explicit duty to carry out
appropriate risk assessments and followup with appropriate
preventative measures such as information and appropriate
training for employees.
(Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999)
